On Finding Introspection During Isolation

For many of us, time has begun to lose its meaning. Days are blending together as we stay at home week after week to help flatten the curve. In this piece, Scott Galloway shares that you can take this time to practice self introspection. Take a minute, or twenty, to really think about your relationships and how invested you are in them. Which relationships would you like to nurture? Which ones are you ready to let go of? If you find yourself worried over an endless influx of bad news,”You might find that taking a moment to think big picture, or how you could help others, can elevate you above the fear zone.” Scott also provides a useful diagram for you to evaluate who you are and who you can be during this pandemic. Isolation fosters introspection. Help others around you by doing some reflection yourself first. Scott Galloway (8 min)

On Staying Motivated While Looking for a Job

This is a challenging time to be looking for a job. We’re with you. In this video, designer Michael DiTullo shares his personal experience of how he missed his chance at a great job when he was starting out his career, and what he did about it. If you haven’t landed a job, (1) make finding a job your current job. There are many platforms for you to network and build relationships. If you are an aspiring designer, you can comment on designers’ work that you admire on social media, send them an email, and ask them how they got to where they are. “A portfolio is never done. It’s a living project.” (2) Set a schedule for yourself. Building your network and your portfolio is a constant work in progress. (3) Stay inspired.. You don’t always have to be creating music, art work, or the next great novel. But you should stay inspired reading/listening/watching works that you DO admire. This is an investment in yourself. (4) Most importantly, Michael points out, “People want to hire people who exude positive energy. People want to hire people they want to spend time with. In order to present your best self, you need to take care of yourself.” So, don’t be too hard on yourself for not having landed an offer yet. Give yourself some grace. Then prepare yourself to seek out those opportunities. They are always out there. Youtube (12 min)

On Choosing Love Over Fear

Many of us are unsure about how to choose the “right” path after college. I was in your shoes a little over a decade ago (yes, I’m aging myself here). In this 2014 commencement speech, Jim Carrey shares his perspective on the importance of choosing to do what you love, and not letting insecurities, expectations, and fear guide your decisions. “So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems ridiculously out of reach and impossible to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it. You can ask the universe for it.” Today, the pandemic has changed our world forever. Especially now, the world is starving for new ideas and leadership, and they must come  from you. You are, after all, the generation that will live in the post Covid world, whatever that looks like. So make it what you want. Grab a cup of tea and take a moment to watch this speech and be inspired. Youtube (26 min)
